How to Get Started with Blogging

How Can Your Business Benefit from Blogging?

​Before I look at how to get started with blogging, let's first look at why your business should be blogging. What's in it for you? How will your business benefit from blogging?

​There are many benefits to having a blog on your website...

1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Adding fresh content to your website on a regular basis can help your search engine optimization (SEO). Basically, this means that if someone is looking on Google for a product or service like you are offering, then your website will be far more likely to come higher up in the search results if you are adding good quality content in the form of a blog post on a regular basis.

This is due to the fact that Google favours websites that regularly publish good quality content and a blog is the perfect way to add fresh content to your website on a regular basis.

If you regularly publish a blog post on your website that will be of interest to people then Google will track this and be more inclined to return your website in the search results if someone types in the Google Search bar for a product or service like you are offering.

2. Social Media

When you've published a blog post on your website you then have fresh and unique content to share with your followers on social media.

When people click on the link to your blog posts in your social media posts this will then further help your search engine optimization as Google will recognise that people are linking from social media to your website which will again help to persuade them that your site is of interest to people and therefore a good site to bring up in the search results as people are linking to it.

3. Email Marketing

Do you have a mailing list? Email marketing is a fantastic way to build a relationship with your customers and prospects, but you can only do that if you are emailing them good content on a regular basis.

If you publish a blog post on a regular basis then you will have quality content to email your list.

Your blog is also a great way to remind your subscribers that you know what you're talking about and can be seen as an authority in your field. Someone that they can trust to do a good job.

What to Blog About

For a lot of people one of the hardest things about getting started with blogging is knowing what to blog about.


Blog Idea Generators
There are a number of websites that you can use to generate blog titles to help you get started, for example Hubspot's Blog Idea Generator. However be aware that lots of other people will be using these sites so you may find that your blog post is not quite as unique as you'd like.

Email Marketing
If you have a mailing list then you could email your subscribers to ask them what they would like you to blog about.

Social Media
Likewise put out some posts on social media asking people what you they would like you to blog about.

Blogging Top Tips

1. Write for Your Target Market and Not for the Search Engines
While it may be tempting to cram lots of keywords into your blog post in the hope that it will help your blog post get found more easily online, Google will penalise you if they think you are keyword cramming.

Write naturally with your target market in mind. 

​Don't get me wrong, you still need to use keywords, but let the copy flow naturally. Focus on writing quality content.

2. Avoid Huge Walls of Text
People tend to skim read on the internet rather than reading every single word.

That's why it's so important to break up your blog post so that people can skim read it. Avoid huge chunks of text.

You can break up your blog post in many ways, for example by using:

  • Bullets
  • Headers
  • Sub headers
  • Videos
  • Images
  • GIFs
  • Bold text
  • Coloured text
  • Italics
  • Quotations

3. Word Count
I would recommend that you aim for a minimum of 500 words. Any shorter than this and you might find it difficult to discuss your topic in any detail.


4. Be Consistent
Set yourself a realistic target for the number of times you will be able to blog each week or month and stick to it.

If you consistently blog every Tuesday your prospects and customers will quickly come to expect your blog post every Tuesday.

By being consistent you reinforce in the minds of your prospects and customers that you can be relied upon to be consistent and deliver what you promise.
